Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate commonly known as alum, is a blue-green crystal or particles, mainly used for iron fertilizer, pesticides, pigments, medicine, etc., in addition to chromatographic analysis reagents. It is a by-product of the sulfuric acid process in the production of a rare metal product. The product is a light green or yellowish-green crystalline solid.

The color of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is green, monoclinic crystal or particle, no odor, relative density 1.898, melting point 64ºC. Easily soluble in water, (48.6g/100ml water at 50ºC) red heat decomposition to form ferric trioxide, soluble in glycerol, insoluble in ethanol, corrosive, in dry air will be weathered. At 56.6ºC, the heptahydrate is transformed into tetrachlates, and at 64.6ºC, it becomes monohydrate. At 90ºC, six crystalline water is lost, and at 300ºC, all crystalline water is lost to form anhydrous substance. At red heat, SO2 and SO3 are decomposed and released. It's corrosive. It fluoresces in dry air. The anhydrous substance is a white powder, but when it is mixed with water it turns blue-green.

Application

1). Used for making iron salt, iron oxide pigment, mordant, water purification agent, preservative, disinfectant, etc;
2). Medically used as anti anemia drugs, local astringents, and blood tonics, it can be used for chronic blood loss caused by uterine fibroids;
3). Analysis reagents and raw materials for ferrite production;
4). Iron fortifier as a feed additive;
5). In agriculture, it can be used as a pesticide to prevent and control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree decay; It can also be used as fertilizer;
6). Edible grade is used as a nutritional supplement, such as iron fortifier and fruit and vegetable coloring agent.
7). It is a raw material for manufacturing magnetic iron oxide, iron oxide red and iron blue inorganic pigments, iron catalysts, and polyferric sulfate.
8). In addition, it is also used as a chromatographic analysis reagent, etc.
